Using Instagram on Desktop: What Works and What Doesn't
Instagram's web version is missing a lot compared to the app. Here's what you can and can't do from a browser.
Instagram was built mobile-first and the web version still shows it. Some things work fine in a browser, others are quietly missing.
What works on the web
- Browsing feeds, profiles, and reels
- Direct messages
- Posting, added years after the app
- Viewing stories from accounts you follow
What is missing or awkward
Media downloads are not offered at all. Grid browsing hits a login wall on public profiles after a short scroll. There is no way to view a profile picture at full size, and saving anything means screenshotting.
Filling the gaps
A profile viewer covers the parts the web app leaves out: full grids without a login wall, full-size avatars, and downloads of supported public media on paid plans.
For research or reference work, the browser plus a viewer beats the app.
